Houston, We Have a Division Leader
NASA Tuesdays 29, Norsemen 10
The Norsemen came into Week 8 sitting on top of the Burgundy at 5-2, and NASA Tuesdays came in half a game behind with the stingiest defense in the league. By the end of the night the Burgundy had a new leader, and it wasn’t Byron.
This one was won in the trenches more than on the highlight reels. NASA Tuesdays’ backfield did the heavy lifting: Tony Pollard ran for 19 points and Jahmyr Gibbs added 16, so the ground game carried the load while Matthew Stafford (4) mostly stayed out of the way. The Chicago Bears line chipped in 8, Chase McLaughlin hit for 7, and NASA ended up with 61 offensive points. That looked like plenty until the Norsemen defense got its say.
To their credit, the Norsemen defense showed up. Quentin Lake led a 27-point effort with 10, and Nick Bolton and Jamien Sherwood added 5 each, which cut NASA’s total down to 29. The trouble was everything on the other side of the ball. Drake Maye did his part with 19, but after that the offense ran dry: Amon-Ra St. Brown managed 3, J.K. Dobbins was shut out, and Eddy Pineiro somehow went negative (-5). When your kicker owes you points, it’s not your night.
NASA Tuesdays’ defense finished the job. Jessie Bates (8) and Kyle Hamilton (5) led an 18-point unit that took a big bite out of the Norsemen’s modest 38. Add 10 points in penalties and the Norsemen were left with just 10. It was their lowest output of the season, and it came on the night they could least afford it.
With the win, NASA Tuesdays move to 5-2-1 and take over first place in the Burgundy. That tie from Week 4 is now the tiebreaker that matters, because the Norsemen and Richard’s Lionhearts both sit at 5-3. Next week brings another Burgundy showdown, NASA Tuesdays vs. Richard’s Lionhearts, against a Lionhearts team that has put up 79 and 85 the last two weeks. The Norsemen try to get back on track against the Gallic Warriors, who are tough to read after scoring 91 and then 3 in back-to-back weeks.
Around the League
Trump Molests Collies 89, Amish Electricians 2. This was over early and never got close again. Tee Higgins led the way with 27, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers line added an incredible 26, about what a whole unit usually scores. Josh Allen threw in 21 and Josh Jacobs 14 as the Collies put up 107 offensive points, the most of anyone this week. The Amish Electricians got 10 from Matthew Golden and 7 from Pat Freiermuth, but Foyesade Oluokun (7) and the Collies defense wiped out almost all of their 25 offensive points. The Gold Division rivals were both 3-4 coming in, and now the Collies are 4-4 while the Electricians drop to 3-5. Next week the Collies host Sacks on the Beach and the Electricians try to bounce back against Omar’s Coming.
Richard’s Lionhearts 85, Rocky Mountain Oysters 0. Joe Burrow had a monster night. His 41 points were the best of any player in the league, Bhayshul Tuten added 21, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba chipped in 13 for a Lionhearts offense that scored 102. The Oysters had something of a horror show. A 25-point penalty and a San Francisco 49ers line that went -10 sank them, and their total actually went below zero before the floor rounded it up to a gift-wrapped 0. Roquan Smith (11) and Luther Burden (9) tried, but the Lionhearts defense, led by Anthony Hill Jr.’s 10, didn’t leave much behind. The Lionhearts go to 5-3 and are right in the Burgundy race, while the Oysters slip to 3-4-1 and face MeggaMen next.
Crusaders 22, Gallic Warriors 3. A week ago the Gallic Warriors put up 91, and this week they looked like a different team. Lamar Jackson was shut out, and the Dallas players on their roster had a rough week: CeeDee Lamb had 3, while George Pickens and Javonte Williams were both held scoreless. Trey McBride (10) and Brandon Aubrey (8) were about all the offense there was. The Crusaders defense did the damage, with Alex Singleton (9), D.J. Reed (7), and Ernest Jones (6) holding Gallic to 3 points. On offense, Bucky Irving and Puka Nacua had 15 apiece, enough on a night when Baker Mayfield didn’t score. The sting for the Warriors: Patrick Mahomes scored 24 on their bench, enough to swing the result. The Crusaders move to 5-3 and alone in first in the Gold, Gallic falls to 4-4, and it’s the Crusaders vs. Aint Nothing But a Jew Thing next week.
Aint Nothing But a Jew Thing 46, Sacks on the Beach 39. This was the closest game of the week and a White Division battle that stayed tight the whole way. Jordan Love (20) and Brock Bowers (18) led a balanced offense, with Michael Wilson (16) and Jaylen Warren (14) adding plenty. Sacks on the Beach’s defense made them work for it. Amani Hooker scored a big 20 from the secondary, and their 38 defensive points were the most of anyone this week. Chuba Hubbard (14), Dak Prescott (13), and James Cook (10) kept Sacks close, but Trent McDuffie (11) and T.J. Watt (7) made enough plays to hold them off. Aint Nothing But a Jew Thing improve to 5-3 and lead the White, while Sacks fall to 3-4-1 and get the hot Collies next.
MeggaMen 49, Omar’s Coming 26. Kirk Cousins had a big night with 27, and MeggaMen got points from all over the roster. The Detroit Lions line (15) and Tyler Bass (13) made sure the special teams and trenches contributed, and Boye Mafe and Jeremy Chinn added 9 apiece on defense. Ja’Marr Chase (21) and Trevor Lawrence (17) gave Omar’s Coming a chance, and Demetrius Knight added 11, but a negative day from Dominic Zvada and a 5-point penalty didn’t help. MeggaMen even up at 4-4, second in the White, and face the Oysters next. Omar’s Coming are still looking for their first win at 0-7-1, with a shot against the Amish Electricians next week.
